On Wednesday evening around 9:30 p.m. I started having some decent contractions. They were roughly 10 minutes apart, but they were starting to come consistently. At around 11 they started coming every 6-7 minutes. Still not very close, but staying consistent. Jeff and I decided to try to go to bed around midnight since they had not really increased in their frequency. I tossed and turned in bed and realized at about 1:30 that they were starting to come every 3-4 minutes apart. I decided to take a bath to relax a little. After a short bath I woke Jeff up to tell him we needed to call the midwife since the contraction were consistently coming every 3-4 minutes. After speaking with my midwife she said lets head to the hospital. We had about a 45 minute drive and my midwife said it would take her about an hour.
We called our friend who we had lined up to watch the boys, got her settled and headed to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital around 3:30 and the 2 midwives (one that was assigned to me and an extra one to take care of the baby) arrived about 10 minutes later. They checked me and said I was 4-5 centimeters dialated and fully efaced. They recommended that we walk around while they got things set up.
We began walking and came back at 15 minute intervals to listen to the babies' heartbeat. After our second time coming back they decided to check me again. I was at 6, so they broke my water and almost instantly I was at 7. Things were moving much faster than they ever have before. Another 45 minutes went by and I said I needed to push. 4 minutes after that Logan entered the world at 5:29 a.m.. Everything had gone very smooth and it was by far my easiest labor out of the 3. What happened next was unexpected.
After 30 minutes went by I still was unable to deliver the placenta. The midwives decided to give me a shot of oxytocin which is routinely given right after the baby is delivered. Another 15 minutes went by before I delivered the placenta. Then I began to bleed more than they like to see. After it went on for a little while Jeff looked at me and asked me if I was okay. I apparently did not look right to him. I looked over at him and felt like I could barely lift my head. I felt nauseous and things were beginning to turn black. I told the midwife I did not feel good. She took my blood pressure which was 50 over 33. Not good. They laid my down and started doing more aggressive treatment. I was given another shot and more medication to help my uterus contract to stop the bleeding. They also put in an IV to get fluids going in me. In total I lost over a liter of blood. Just as they were about to call in reinforcement the bleeding stopped! It could have been so much worse. The midwives were great and I am thankful for their care of me.
Once things were under control, they weighed and measured Logan. He is little only weighing 6 lbs. 2 oz. He is 20 inches long which makes for a super skinny baby! We spent two nights in the hospital which gave me time for some much needed rest. Besides feeling tired and weak, I am doing great now! I am taking iron to help replenish my blood supply. Overall it was a great experience, but not one I plan to ever repeat again!
